Pneumatic systems require a set of special seal designs for its proper functioning. As the working fluid air or other gases are poor lubricant, care must be taken while designing the seals. In a pneumatic cylinder the major functions of pneumatic seals are to restrict the escape of air or the entrance of foreign materials in the system, maintain alignment of the rod and the piston and in certain cases enable the system to work maintenance free for long periods of time even without lubrication. In comparison to Hydraulic cylinders, Pneumatic cylinders typically demand higher operating speeds (upto 4 m/s), lower friction pneumatic seals and operate at much lower pressures (max 16 bars). Thus the friction created by the seals becomes a very important parameter while designing the seals.
Pneumatic Seals may be used for rotary and reciprocating motion. Common pneumatic seals include: rod seals, piston seals, symmetrical seals, V-Rings, wipers, wear rings, static seals, back-up rings, o-rings etc. Pneumatic seals can be single or double acting. Single acting pneumatic seals are used for one axial direction only. Double acting pneumatic seals are used in both directions for a reciprocating motion. Pneumatic seals can be made of a variety of materials: Polyurethane, Nitrile, Viton, Silicone, EPDM and PTFE.

Piston seals or piston rings are used in pneumatic cylinders for fluid sealing and are designed to ensure that pressurized fluid does not leak across the cylinder head as the system pressure pushes the piston down the cylinder bore.
The choice of piston seal is decided by the way in which the cylinder operates. For a cylinder which is exclusively single-acting, capable of sealing dynamic pressure from one side (unidirectional), it is always best to choose the type of seal designed to provide optimum sealing qualities for single-acting functions.The best sealing capacity of a double-acting cylinder, capable of sealing dynamic pressure from both sides (bidirectional), is achieved by choosing a double-acting seal.
A piston design where two single-acting seals on the piston for a double-acting cylinder are used can easily give rise to a breakdown. The reason is that a very high pressure can be trapped between the seals.
Piston seals, both single and double-acting, can be designed for and used with integrated or separate back-up rings and guide rings.

The function of a wear ring, wear band or guide ring is to absorb the side load forces of the rod and/or the piston and to prevent metal-to-metal contact that would otherwise damage and score the sliding surfaces and eventually cause seal damage, leakage and component failure.
Wear rings should last longer than the seals as they are the only thing stopping expensive damage to the cylinder.

Rod seals, or rings, are used in pneumatic cylinder systems to prevent air from escaping the cylinder. Machined grooves in the cylinder housing allow the rod ring to seal directly against the piston shaft. In a static sealing application there is no movement between the sealing surfaces or between the seal surface and its mating surface.
The most common seal used in static sealing situations is the O-Ring, but in addition to these, we offer a range of specialized static seals.The range includes our proprietary O-Rings, which are ideal for use in extreme temperatures and pressures.

Pneumatic cushioning seal is designed specifically to be used for the cushioning piston in pneumatic cylinders.
Which offers excellent cushioning consistency due to automatic centring, high wear resistance, long service life, easy installation, very low dynamic and static friction, and is suitable for oiled or oil-free working conditions (note that the seal should be lubricated on assembly). Pneumatic cushioning seal can be used safely for pneumatic cylinders.

Wiper seals are also known as Scraper seals. They tend to be used in conjunction with other sealing elements. Wiper seals create a tight fit whilst still allowing a reciprocating ram rod to pass through the inner bore of the seal.
Despite it’s important function, the wiper seal is possibly the most undervalued seal type in the pneumatic cylinders.
Wiper seals are used to eliminate contaminants such as moisture, dirt, and dust. Contamination can cause significant damage to the rod, cylinder wall, seals, and other components. This is one of the primary causes of premature seal and component failure in a fluid power system.
Some Wipers or Scrapers have a secondary lip used to capture any oil that may have bypassed the main seal. The secondary lip may also remove any bonded contaminate from the rod surface. These types of wipers are often called ‘double-edged wipers’.
The common compound for wipers is polyurethane. Metallic scrapers may be used for sub zero temperature applications, and particularly arduous applications where foreign materials can deposit on the rod.
